The course seeks to shed lights on the main economic crisis that occurred during the centuries XX e XXI. By identifying their resemblance and similarities, such as excess of indebtedness by the government, households, banks or external, thanks to excess of money and lack of regulation. These crises are usually preceded by asset bubbles. And ironically as it may looks usually the instruments used (expansionary monetary policy) to address the contractionary effects of a bubble burst are most of the time the seeds of the next crisis.
Initially, the course offers an introduction of the concepts of balance of payments, different kind of crisis and external fragility. Subsequently, the course follows a case study pattern making a deep dive on several crises such as those that hit Brazil ((1982,1999 and 2015), Mexico (1994), Japan (1989), Asia (1997 and 1998), Argentina (2001/2002), US (2007) and Euro Zone (2008).
